Chicago – Amazon.com will soon have games and other iPhone-like applications available for its Kindle electronic reader, a move that comes as Apple is expected to launch a tablet computer that could be a challenger in the e-reader market.
Amazon announced on Thursday that it was releasing a development kit that would let software designers make games and other active content for the Kindle.
Among the early contributors will be Electronic Arts Inc’s EA Mobile unit, which distributes popular mobile games like Tetris, Madden NFL and Scrabble.
Amazon says the Kindle has sold briskly since its introduction in 2007, but the online retailer is facing pressure from new, formidable entrants that could squeeze what e-booksellers make from each title.
Apple is widely expected to unveil its tablet computer, which could also function as an e-reader, at a special event next week in San Francisco.
On Wednesday, Amazon said it will offer higher royalties on the discount books sold on Kindle as it jockeys to offer as many books as possible on the Kindle to try to make it more attractive than competitors’ e-book stores.
Now, by allowing software developers to come up with games and other content for the Kindle, Amazon is offering one of the most popular features of the iPhone, though the Kindle’s black-and-white “electronic paper” screen could limit the vibrancy in some applications.
Amazon suggested in a news release that other developments from the new software kit could include travel books that suggest activities based on real-time weather and current events, and cookbooks that recommend menus based on the size of party and guest allergies. – Reuters
So after using the Amazon Kindle for a couple of weeks I thought I’d let the folks at Amazon know whats bugging me
- Easier Grip - The kindle is so thin and small that its amazingly portable and easy to carry. I like to read lying on my back, while holding the kindle above my head. I find that since its so thin and smooth that its likely to slip through my fingers and hit me on the pip.
- Bigger screen – the white border is too thick around the device screen. Rather make the border thinner and have more screen space on the same size device.
- Folders to Organise Content on the Home Screen - Ability in the home screen to have directories/folders like Personal Interest, Online Business, MBA to file books. Right now I have so many books, samples, magazines and newspapers that its difficult to navigate.
- Moving Samples to Wishlists – Once I have downloaded the sample there is no way to move to wishlist. I may only want to purchase the book at a later time, but dont want it in my home screen, but also dont want to forget about it. Being able to move the book into a wishlist directly would save lots of time.
- Buttons that are Silent - Turning page buttons that dont click. When reading at night with the booklight on, turning the pages makes a loud clicking sound that drives my wife crazy. Especially when I am browsing the store, I tend to flip through the pages of books on offer, and this repetitive clicking is noisy.
I will keep updating this list as I discover more things to suggest.
Appreciate your interest in Kindle and my new Facebook blog which I promise to update.
You are right, there is no web browser (its there but when you click it-it says blocked outside the US) and there are no blogs. This doesnt worry me as I bought a book replacement, I have a small notebook and blackberry for twitter/facebook/blogging. I bought the Kindle so that I could get instant access to a large variety of books instantly. I’ve enrolled for an MBA next year and will download my textbooks to the kindle, as well as any supporting reading material.
Some books are blocked from being bought outside the US. i discovered this buy changing my billing address to Beverley Hills 90210, and then Leicester Square in London and noticed that some titles magically became available. To get around this i simply have added 4 addresses to my kindle account (not sure of what the implication of this is).
Kindle books are undoubtedly significantly cheaper. One of my engineers wants to do CCNA. He bought the Cisco book from Exclusive books for R600. I got the Kindle version for $19.99. For VoIP books or technical books, the prices on Kindle are significantly less. So much so, that i am considering buying Kindles for my entire staff just so that everyone has easy access to training materials.I have not seen any book that is even close in costs between kindle and paperback. Kindle is always cheaper.
I dont understand the DRM problems properly. I do think that if a book is a keeper and worth a 30 year place on my shelf ill probably buy it on paper, maybe not. The MP3 players and ipod worked so well because of an open format for music, and so surely an open book standard will also be used and supported in future. Remember that ipod was lousy when it started but after multiple iterations it hit mainstream. I am sure that in 4 years Kindle/Nook/Sony/any other ebook reader will be mainstream.
Kindle was a slight risk, but im happy to be an early adopter and test it out. I intend to send Amazon plenty of feedback so that the next version is far better. I will update this facebook page and let you know how its going.
Had a snag where the Kindle worked at my offices in Rosebank and I could go online, but could not get this to work from home. Quiet irritating as I like to read in bed and look for interesting artciles/magazines.
Sometimes it would also no connect at the office either which was stressing me out.
I phoned Amazon.com and got excellent service. The trick is to go to:
Home ->Settings
then on the keyboard press 311 and it will open a prompt to search for carrier networks.
Give it about 30 seconds and a list of networks will be shown. Move the tick to be next to Vodacom 3G.
My kindle was roaming on CellC 2G network. I switched it to Vodacom 3G and it works great. It shows 3G on the screen and is sitting at 100% signal.
Quite a relief since i thought the device was faulty
